Historic canvases deciphered

Poster presentation and workshops at the Conserving Canvas Symposium

(hosted by Yale University’s Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage and funded by the Getty Foundation)

Textiles with woven patterns were used as canvas by Spanish, Italian and Portuguese artists in the 16th and 17th centuries. Handwoven reconstructions of these canvases are produced at Lab O.

The research and reconstruction of canvases contributes to understanding technical painting art history and brings attention to an understudied aspect of textile production during this period.

The results of the work at Lab O are published in this webpage.
