Portrait of a Man 1570-75
Statens Museum for Kunst
National Gallery of Denmark

El Greco’s Portrait of a Man is painted in his Rome period, before he travelled to Toledo, and on a canvas with a pattern.
High quality photograph of the xray image was kindly sent to me by conservator Troels Filtenborgh from The SMK

while tracing on top of the pattern I noticed differently forms of the overall pattern.
The weave drafts show how these forms were made

front and back; note where, highlighted in orange, warp threads are vertical on one side they are horizontal on the other side.

for a better visual effect a white warp and blue weft was used
