Weave drafts as we use for handweaving today is a single graphic of the structure of a textile that contains all the information of how a pattern is woven on the loom and what the textile looks in terms of its graphic design.
It shows how the warp ends are placed in the heddles in the shafts of the loom, which combination of shafts is tied to the treadles and how the weaver works the treadles before each weft pass is woven into the stretched warp to weave the cloth.
A pattern originates by lifting some shafts while others stay in place in a certain combination that is tied to a treadle. A combination changes each time before the shuttle with the weft thread is thrown, treadling the designed sequence of the weave draft.
